So it’s April and a host of sporting activity comes, almost, to a close. The IPL, BPL are at their fag ends and it's anybody’s guess who'll run away with glory. Formula 1 though has just started and I'm eagerly sitting in anticipation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (drool).
But before that even comes close we have to deal with whose going to take away glory in European football. I must confess that when it comes to the "beautiful game", I like most in my age group, have been smitten only with European(read mostly English) football. Call it marketing or good football it just works for me. I do once in a while glance at our own domestic I-League...but hey...it's got a lot of catching up to do!!!
Coming back to football the 2009-10 English Premier league is now almost at an end!!! Every team has only 3 or 4 matches to go and the title race is wide open. To be honest it's been a while since I have actually supported a team in the premier league. When the season began I desperately hoped and prayed that Manchester United should get some worthy competition. Their successive wins for the past few years have been well deserved but quite predictable for someone like me. With the departure of Christiano Ronaldo, I thought that the void would be un-fillable(if that’s a word), but the genius of Sir Alex has once again been the 12th man for Man United.
Far more surprising this year has been the fact that fourth place in the standings is up for grabs for almost 5 different teams! Tottenham Hotspurs, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and to an extent Everton were all tipped as contenders for that vital fourth place. After much sweat and toil it seems that the Spurs and Man City are the ones who will finally fight the last bout. It’s a bit embarrassing, but I have come to appreciate Manchester city a tad bit (Courtesy Carlos Tevez). The poor team had been labelled as pretenders from the very beginning of the season and have been punching and kicking from a corner to get the attention that they now truly deserve. On top of that I really think that Mancini and Tevez really deserve a European platform to unleash their fury in totality. But before that can happen, they have to climb the mountain that stands in front of them in the form of Arsenal and the Spurs themselves.
Tottenham Hotspurs, who by the way are on a roll thanks to their steamrolling of Arsenal and Chelsea (shmucks) , have their own mountain to climb in the form of Manchester United. The devils have been terribly out of form and should the spurs continue their rampaging ways, there is little to stop them from creating a gap between them and Man City. It’s a wait and watch till the Spurs v/s City matchup in two weeks!!!
A point to raise here is that it’s good to finally see teams other than the top four fight for the final champions league spot. Last year Aston Villa came close to fourth before bottling it up and this year too it’s an open race. Hope the trend continues and fans like me will surely have a better season to look forward to.
And as for the title contenders....Well I wouldn’t dare predict anything...Although it’s an open match between Man United and Chelsea, I would give the latter a better chance. Wayne Rooney’s prolific form has been not-so-prolific off late and Berbatov sleeping on the pitch is not helping matters either. Heavy dependence on Nani and Valencia is United only route. Chelsea have the capability to come back like wounded tigers and with weaker oppositions like Stoke, Wigan and Liverpool they surely will.
So that’s that about the English Premier League. The rest of Europe? Like always the La Liga is left between Barcelona and Real Madrid, Bundesliga is being dominated by Bayern Munchen and Serie A finally got a rude shock with Roma actually threating to take top spot from Inter. ( I know very brief but thats the jist of it...trust me!!!).
So till more action packed football next week...its ciao from me!!!
